For archivists

Web history, in one step

Point ZShot at a page or a whole site and get back a standards-based archive you can replay years from now.

A crawl of a site that skips a URL by rule and one robots.txt disallows, written to one WACZ file holding a WARC, a CDXJ index and a page list.

Simple setup

Choose Archive in the app and give it a page or a whole site. It comes back as one WACZ file, ready to replay.

Crawl a site into a WACZ →

Tunable controls

Allow and deny URLs by pattern, set how many links deep to follow, cap the pages and disk a crawl uses, and give slow pages more time, so the archive holds what you meant to keep.

Standards based

ZShot writes WARC and WACZ files with CDXJ indexes. They replay in ReplayWeb.page and pywb, the ZShot app opens them, and Finder previews them with Quick Look.

WACZ →

Site owner friendly

ZShot follows robots.txt, waits between pages on each host, and waits longer when a site asks. Its user agent names it and links site owners to how to opt out.

Questions

Before you start archiving

Which tools can open the archives?
The ZShot app opens WARC and WACZ files, and Finder previews them with Quick Look. ReplayWeb.page and pywb replay them too, finding each capture through the CDXJ index. See the WACZ format.
Can I archive a single page?
Yes. Archive a page without following its links, and the WARC holds that page with every resource it loads.
Will it ignore robots.txt if I ask?
Only with an Enterprise license. Every other license follows robots.txt, the Crawl-delay it sets, and the nofollow, noindex and noarchive directives pages give. Check a site’s terms before you archive it, and ask the owner when in doubt.
How large can a crawl get?
As large as you let it. Link depth, URL rules and caps on pages and disk space bound it, and a crawl that reaches a cap stops and keeps what it captured. Start small and widen the rules once you’ve seen what a crawl brings back.
Can I run crawls on a schedule?
Yes. Run the CLI or the Docker image from your scheduler. The app copies any capture as its CLI command.
Is it really pay once?
Yes. Standard and Pro are one-time purchases that include updates for the major version you buy.
